Best time to visit Antigua and Barbuda

Are you considering a holiday in Antigua and Barbuda but you're not sure what's the best time to visit?

In this blog post we'll go through what's the weather like in Antigua and Barbuda, what is "dry season" and "hurricane season" and the best time to visit the twin-islands nation.

Antigua e Barbuda weather

The island of Antigua and Barbuda is part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago and is located in the Caribbean Sea, north of Guadeloupe and east of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Its tropical weather makes it a suitable destination for beach holidays almost all year round. I say almost because there's a season that it's best to avoid, the so-called "hurricane season".

All right, first things first, let's find out what are the seasons in Antigua and Barbuda.

Seasons in Antigua and Barbuda

There are only two seasons in Antigua and Barbuda: the dry season and the rainy season.

  • The dry season runs from December to May, and it's also the high season: temperatures stay between 22°C and 29°C, in December people fly to Antigua to escape the cold winter months and the prices are generally higher.
Note: dry season doesn't mean it never rains. I've been to Antigua twice in March, and during my second stay, I witnessed some very short rains, followed by a beautiful sunny sky (see photo above).

  • The rainy season runs from June to November, it's the low season: temperatures stay between 26 ° and 31 ° C, the weather is humid and muggy, there are fewer tourists, but the island is liven up by various events such as the Antigua Carnival, the Antigua Jazz Festival and the yacht regattas.
If you can only visit during our summer, it would be best to visit Antigua and Barbuda in June or July when the chance of rains, tropical storms and hurricanes is low, and the average rainfall is generally lower.

The sea temperaure in Antigua and Barbuda is pleasant all year round, it stays between 27°C and 30° C.

The hurricane season

There are two times of the year when the so-called "hurricane season" is expected in Antigua and Barbuda:

  • June, July, and November (low chance)
  • August, September, and October (higher chance)

"Hurricane Season" means there is high alert on the island, but hurricanes don't necessarily hit. In this case, the Antigua and Barbuda authorities will inform the population of their evacuation strategy in order to keep them safe before the hurricane strikes.

What's the best time to visit Antigua and Barbuda?

In short: the best time to visit Antigua and Barbuda is our winter, from December to April.

If you want to save a little money you can also consider May, June, and July, bearing in mind that you may find more showers and a generally more humid climate.
